Musculoskeletal disorders are common, and conditions such as low back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome may require treatment during pregnancy. Rheumatic conditions are more common in women, with the peak prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus occurring in women of childbearing age. Antirheumatic drugs are, therefore, often required for women of childbearing age.' Table I lists the groups of drugs prescribed for rheumatic conditions. Analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are most commonly prescribed, some of which-for example, ibuprofen-are now available without prescription.
